Scarborough should be a place where everyone feels safe in their neighbourhood, on our streets, and public transit. While violent crime has declined over the past year, people are still concerned about safety and we need to take those concerns seriously. Safety means addressing crime when it happens, but also preventing it in the first place by investing in youth, housing, safer streets, and stronger communities.
Commitments
- Keep pushing Vision Zero to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries, with a focus on dangerous speeding, stunt driving, and street racing on roads like Pharmacy Avenue.
- Expand youth intervention and diversion programs that address the root causes of violent crime and give young people meaningful alternatives, support, and opportunities before they become involved in the justice system.
- Tackle car theft by working with Toronto Police, other levels of government, automakers, and communities to prevent vehicle theft, disrupt organized networks, and better protect residents.
- Make transit safer by building on approaches like the TTC’s Transit Response Team that connect people experiencing complex needs with appropriate services, ensuring police remain available to respond quickly to serious offences.
- Build stronger neighbourhoods where people know and look out for one another by supporting community events and local organizations that reduce social isolation, creating a local safety net when incidents happen.
